Press ReleasesJune 3, 2010 2010 Power Woman Award to Be Presented at the Power Women’s Summit on June 9th The Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that Terri Wilson, Vice President of Operations and Chief Operating Officer for STCU has been named as the 2010 Power Woman Award winner. This is the second year for this award which recognizes business excellence and outstanding involvement in the community. The award is sponsored by Sterling Savings and will be presented during the luncheon program at the 2010 Power Women’s Summit on June 9th at the Mirabeau Park Hotel. Ms. Wilson was selected from a group of nominees which included: Jennifer Johnson, Jennifer’s Auto Sales; Cher Merrill, Associated Industries; Shirene Young, Inland Empire Paper Co.; Carrie Magruder, Brick House Massage and Coffee Bar; Monique Smith, Monique’s Salon and Coleen Quisenberry, Quisenberry Marketing and Design. “All of the nominees were truly excellent and deserving this recognition,” said Eldonna Shaw, President and CEO of the Valley Chamber. Shelley Runolfson, event chairman and member of the Chamber Board of Directors commented, “We are so fortunate to have such talented women in our community and the committee had quite a task.” The award was selected by a special committee designated by the Board of Directors and members were chosen who have no connection to the nominees. The committee reviewed all nomination forms and supportive materials in making their decision which is being announced today. Friends and associates are invited to come to the luncheon. A 10-week evening course designed to help new entrepreneurs establish their businesses and create an initial business plan will be offered by the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce May 26 through July 28 at the Valley Chamber Business Center at Liberty Lake, 1421 N. Meadowwood Lane. Cost for the course, which will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each week, is $395. Course sessions consist of academics, guest presentations and interactive discussion among participants, according to John Pederson, Chamber director of business development and administrator of the course. Called NxLeveL (pronounced “next level”), the course covers among other things, business setup basics, marketing feasibility and target marketing, record keeping , budgeting, financial statements, and sources of financing, said Pederson. “We have been offering NxLeveL courses now for over two years,” said Eldonna Shaw, Chamber president and CEO. “In the past we have focused on a course designed primarily for entrepreneurs who have already started their business or at least had a good grasp on what business they wanted to pursue. This time, we are focusing primarily on the entrepreneur who is just starting up.” NxLeveL courses in the past have been offered at the Chamber’s Business Center in Spokane Valley. “We are very pleased to conduct this course at our new Business Center in Liberty Lake,” said Ms. Shaw. According to Ms. Shaw, 60 people have completed the Chamber’s NxLeveL courses since the first one was offered in Spring, 2008. The 2010 Miss Spokane Valley is Hannah Robb from Central Valley High School. Crowned as members of the court of the Miss Spokane Valley Ambassadors, are Emmalee Ohlstrom of East Valley High School and Madeleine Walsh of University High School. This is the 7th year for the Miss Spokane Valley Ambassador program which focuses on academic achievement, public speaking skills and community involvement. Contestants are juniors in high school who attend schools in Spokane Valley. Each contestant was required to submit an essay describing why she wanted to serve as a Miss Spokane Valley Ambassador. Twenty-eight applicants were interviewed by a panel of judges which determined the 15 finalists. Saturday afternoon the finalists participated in another round of interviews and had the opportunity to show off their public speaking skills Saturday evening when they addressed the public at the program. Winners were selected at the end of the evening based on the three highest cumulative point scores. Miss Spokane Valley will receive a $1,000 scholarship and the two Ambassador Assistants will each receive a $500 scholarship. Scholarship awards will be made payable to the university or college of the winner’s choice. T he winners are the official community goodwill ambassadors representing all of the communities in Spokane Valley. They will be present at community events, grand openings and parades in the coming year. One of their first official acts will be to participate in the Lilac Festival representing the community on a beautiful float in the Torchlight Parade. AcademyFebruary 9, 2010 Vicki Johnson, the Director of Promotions and Events at the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce, was among the 31 chamber executives to graduate last Friday from Academy, a professional development program presented by the Western Association of Chamber Executives (W.A.C.E.). Academy is an interactive 3-day (three year) training program on chamber management essentials designed for today’s chamber executives and staff professionals. “We congratulate all of the graduates and their chambers for having the vision to invest in professional development,” said W.A.C.E. President Dave Kilby. During the three-year Academy program, graduates participated in 18 three-hour classes and successfully completed additional independent study outside of the classroom. W.A.C.E is an association of chamber of commerce executives and staff professionals designed to promote and enhance professional development. The highlight of the evening was the presentation honoring the 2009 Harry E. Nelson “Citizen of the Year”” Peggy Doering was honored for being “Valleyfest Innovator” for her many years of service to create Valleyfest as the signature festival in the community. In 2009 Valleyfest celebrated a 20th anniversary. Peggy Doering worked with the program from its inception as a neighborhood park event for children to the 3 day festival which includes the “Hearts of Gold Parade on Sprague Avenue in downtown Spokane Valley and many entertainment events for visitors of all ages. The events are centered at Mirabeau Point Park and attract over 30,000 visitors. A recent attraction has been a hot air balloon event. The Harry E. Nelson Award was created by the Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce to honor a citizen who has demonstrated exemplary service to the business and surrounding community. This distinction is held by only 15 training professionals across the nation. The NxLevel Foundation produces and directs the NxLevel Entrepreneur Training program which is the training program of choice for small businesses offered by Washington State University’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC). The Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce is one of the SBDC’s selected sites to offer the NxLevel program. The training program is the focal point for the Chamber’s small business development and incubation program at the Business Center located at 9507 E. Sprague. NxLevel is a 36 hour intensive program covering information necessary to start a business. Participants can complete the program with a functional business plan. The Chamber has currently trained 27 entrepreneurs since starting to offer classes last year. A unique feature of the Chamber’s program is a team teaching approach and the involvement of local experts as guest speakers in such fields as law, finance, accounting and marketing. In addition to his duties as Director of Membership, John Pederson serves as the administrator for the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber’s NxLevel Program. As a Master Trainer, he will train additional trainer/facilitators for the Chamber’s program and will also be available to help other communities start NxLevel Programs in the state of Washington. Pederson joined the Chamber staff in 2006 after a successful career as the President & CEO of Better Business Bureaus in Waco, Texas and the New England region. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Business and Master of Business Administration from the University of Idaho as well as a Master of International Management from the American Graduate School of International Management, Glendale, Arizona. His background includes over 16 years of sales, marketing and corporate communications, as well as 12 years active duty as a US Air Force pilot. He is also completing a designation in the U.S. Chamber Institute for Organization Management. A “power woman” is creative. She has the ability to find that extra energy to get jobs done and meet demanding deadlines. She has mastered the art of multi-tasking. She is busy but finds time to lend a helping hand to customers, associates and friends. She is an inspiration to her peers and is respected by her industry. She is not only a success in business but manages to give back to her community while balancing the needs of work and family. The selection of this first recipient was made by the planning committee for the Power Women’s Summit led by Shelley Runolfson, co-owner of Fashion Carpets in Spokane Valley. Per Runolfson, “We are looking forward to the opportunity to honor many outstanding women in the years to come.”
As the first award winner, Cindra Shields started a successful career in the publishing industry in California in 1988. She became active in the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce where she won the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2000. She then joined the Chamber staff in Redondo Beach as the Creative Director and won the Outstanding Achievement Award for Newsletter, given by the Western Association of Chamber Executives. This coveted award was won just 7 months after she created the publications division for that organization. In 2003 she decided to move to the Spokane area and chose to locate her business in Spokane Valley. She has become an active member of the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce and of the Inland NW Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO). In 2006 she became the publisher of Remodel Spokane. In 2007 the Spokane Home Builders Association honored her with the Presidents Award for Outstanding Service to the building industry.
The 2009 Power Women’s Summit, with the theme “Staying Up in Down Times”, was well attended and attracted women in business from throughout the inland northwest. It was a one-day conference at the Mirabeau Park Hotel featuring noted author and communications specialist, Marsha Petrie Sue from Scottsdale, AZ. The program also included a panel of successful women in nontraditional fields and workshops geared to help women maintain a competitive edge in business and in the workplace. The Power Women’s Summit is an annual event produced by the Chamber.

| June 1, 2009 | Spokane Valley Rotary Scholarship Winners | The Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the winners of the four Spokane Valley Rotary Club Scholarships. Each of the following students will receive a $750 scholarship. All are honor students with high school grade point averages ranging from 3.45 to 3.98 and are very active in the community. Alexandra Norris is a senior at University High School who plans to attend the University of Idaho to study political science with the intention of securing a career in foreign service with the diplomatic corps or possibly entering ROTC. She has been very active in school leadership programs and is interested in RYLA, the Rotary Youth Leadership Program. Clinton Slovarp attends West Valley High School as well as Eastern Washington University through the running start program. He will not only graduate from high school this year but will graduate from EWU next year with a degree in biology. He plans to become a pharmacist. He was captain of East Valley’s first robotics team. Patrick Croskrey attends Central Valley High School and plans to study business at Brigham Young University with future plans of someday opening a restaurant. He is also a running start student at EWU and has made the Deans Honor Role for the entire school year with a 3.87 grade point average in college courses. He is also an Eagle Scout. Ryan Dubois will graduate this Spring from University High School and will be entering the honors program at EWU to study physical therapy. He plans to pursue a doctorate in physical therapy. He has been very active in scouting and last summer earned his Eagle Scout designation. He also works during the school year and summers at Holman Gardens. This year the Rotary offered a new scholarship and that is the Al Stevens Music Scholarship. This scholarship is now available to students attending Valley schools as well as Rogers High School which is the school from which Al graduated. T his $500 scholarship goes to Michael Landkammer, a senior graduating from Rogers High School with a 3.9 grade point average. He says music defines him. He is chapter president of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and is active in the concert as well as jazz band. He plays steel drums in the Rogers Steel Drum Band as well as being 2nd Trumpet in the Spokane All City Band. Cataldo in Liberty Lake.
