Chamber Foundation Annual Meetingkids
Program: “Growing Young Leaders in our Community”

This will be an overview of the scholarships and programs sponsored by the Spokane Valley Chamber Foundation. The purpose of the Foundation is promoting and enhancing community development through the creation and sponsorship of scholarships, leadership development, and educational programs.

Our guest speaker will be Jane Hession, Academic Advisor at Gonzaga University, who is also a member of the Board of Directors for Washington Business Week.

Each year the Foundation has made it possible for eight high school students to attend Business Week, a summer program for young future entrepreneurs.

The cost of $25 for each person attending includes breakfast.  As always, online registration is preferred, and is followed up by an email receipt.  You can also register by calling the Chamber office at 924-4994.

Have you been giving thought to running for public office?  There are a number of positions in the Spokane area that will be on the ballot and your name could be there. Find out more by attending our Candidate’s School at the Spokane Valley Chamber Business Center Conference Room,   from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.  on Wednesday, April 13th. This is an afternoon workshop that will have sessions on what it is like to hold public office, organizing and running a campaign, working with the media and where to find out details to sharpen your knowledge about community issues. Attendees will receive a reference notebook with information you need to know in order to file to become a candidate as well as background information that you can use in planning a successful campaign.  Cost to attend is $25 and includes refreshments and materials.

"Chamber Internet Presence Has Value”

Dear Members:

I have been in the process of going over the value of our promotional opportunities with Major Sponsors and have discovered some interesting things about the value of our website and our Facebook page that I would like to share.

websiteWe know here at the office that our site gets a lot of activity because when people call us, we ask how they found out about us and many times it is through a visit to our website  www.spokanevalleychamber.org. Just a few days ago I got a call from a Toronto business man who is planning a trip to the Spokane area and wanted recommendations for restaurants.  It was early in the morning and he apologized due to the time zone difference. He was about to leave on travel,  saw my cell phone number on our site and decided to give me a call. It was nice chatting with him and after I gave him some suggestions, I asked him if he always consulted Chambers of Commerce in new communities that he was about to visit and he responded,

Yes, definitely, because Chambers of Commerce are established and usually easy to identify.” He also added “By the way, your site is really easy to navigate and very informative.” 

This was great feedback because we compete with many sources of information on the internet. 

The story I just shared could be said to be an isolated incident. However, we can document that a large number of people are visiting our site.  Last month our daily average of unique visitors was 499. That is not “hits” but true visitors that are not counted twice even if they return on that same day.  In the last 12 months there have been 174,959 visits to the site.  To me that is a significant number of people learning about our organization and finding out about you as a member business or organization.   Remember that as a member you are listed on our site along with a Google Map to help a potential customer find you.

facebookFacebook is working out very well for us and I want to encourage you to use our page.  Become a “friend” and share your ideas or post your comments.  I am finding that Facebook is a great tool to post messages that will be immediately read.  A couple of weeks ago when we had a big snow storm, I was able to notify members on Facebook of changed hours at the office and a meeting that was still scheduled in spite of the weather. I expect to see us using Facebook a great deal more. It is being perceived as valuable.  Would you have guessed that last month we ranked #3 in “Liked” Chamber pages of larger Pacific Northwest Chambers? Well, we certainly did, and right behind the Association of Washington Business (AWB) and the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce, so we were among distinguished company.

If you haven’t taken a look at our Chamber website or our Facebook page recently, I encourage you to do so. I think you will be pleased by what you see. We continue to work to increase the value of your Chamber membership.
