Position Summary

The Director of Government Affairs will lead the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce’s government affairs program and will serve as the primary advocate for the business community in all levels of government. The Director of Government Affairs will develop and implement strategies to positively impact public policy at the local, state, and federal levels. The Director of Government Affairs will work closely with elected officials, staff, and other key stakeholders to advance the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce’s public policy goals and objectives. The Director of Government Affairs reports directly to the President & CEO of the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Essential Job Functions: 

  • Develop and implement comprehensive strategies to influence public policy at the local, state, and federal levels.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with elected officials, staff, and other key stakeholders.
  • Represent the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce at legislative hearings, meetings, and other public events.
  • Monitor and analyze legislative and regulatory developments that impact the business community.
  • Prepare and distribute regular updates to the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce membership on legislative and regulatory developments.
  • Work closely with the President/CEO, Board of Directors, and other key stakeholders to develop and advocate for the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce’s public policy priorities.
  • Develop and maintain a robust grassroots advocacy program to engage the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce membership in the legislative process.
  • Work collaboratively with other chambers of commerce, business organizations, and stakeholders to advance shared policy objectives.
  • Manages the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Government Action Committee (GAC), Transportation Committee, and oversees programs and events of the like as assigned by the C.E.O.
  • Works with the communications and marketing teams to publicize consistent position and image for the Chamber in the area of government affairs, including information posted on Chamber website.
  • Speaks on behalf of the Chamber on public policy issues in the absence of the C.E.O.
  • Makes presentations to the Board of Directors on Government Relations and Public Policy strategies and activities.
  • Build relationships with other Government Affairs professionals in the business community.
  • Conducts research and compiles statistical reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Policy, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in government affairs, public policy, or a related field. Other applicable experience will be considered.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal legislative and regulatory processes and experience in advocating for policy change.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to interpret complex information and data.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize various AI tools to maximize workflow processes.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to articulate complex issues in a clear and concise manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with elected officials, staff, and other key stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Experience managing a Government Action Committee (GAC) or Political Action Committee (PAC) is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and goals of the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce.

 

Physical Demands:

  • This job requires the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, use a computer keyboard and monitor, and communicate with others verbally and in writing.

Work Environment:

  • This job is performed in a professional office environment, with some work performed in external settings such as government offices, legislative hearings, and events.

Travel:

  • This position requires occasional local, regional, and national travel.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Salary Range $50,000-$70,000. Salary commensurate with experience. Benefits package includes employer paid contribution, access to health insurance, retirement plan, paid time off, and other benefits as outlined in the employee handbook.
