The Air Race Classic, the prestigious all-women’s transcontinental air race, will takeoff on June 17 from Fairhope, Alabama, with Spokane pilots Sarah Roark and Rachel Skirvin leading the charge as the Felts Field Sky Queens. The team has secured the coveted first departure slot, giving them maximum visibility in this historic competition.

The Sky Queens will pilot a Piper Cherokee 235 across more than 2,400 miles of challenging terrain. The team has been organized by Andy Luebke of the Washington Pilots Association (WPA). This race carries on a proud tradition dating back to 1929 when aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart competed.

This year’s race will conclude at Spokane’s Felts Field (KSFF), coinciding with Neighbor Day, which will feature aircraft displays and aviation exhibits. A special ARC Youth Activity is planned to inspire young people and introduce them to local aviators.

Sarah Roark, a commercial pilot who flies a Falcon 50 professionally, and Rachel Skirvin, a Certified Flight Instructor (CFII) based in Spokane, bring expertise to the cockpit. Both serve on the Board of Directors for the Spokane Chapter of the WPA and are passionate advocates for aviation in the region.

“Being the first team to depart is a thrilling opportunity to represent Spokane and showcase the strength of women in aviation,” said Roark. “We’re ready to compete and inspire the next generation of pilots right here at home.”

The Air Race Classic isn’t just a race—it’s a platform to encourage and educate current and future women pilots. With women making up only about 6% of professional pilots in the U.S., events like this spotlight the need for diversity in aviation. The Sky Queens embody this mission, mentoring young aviators and promoting general aviation’s impact. Felts Field alone contributes millions annually to the Spokane regional economy, supporting jobs, tourism, and infrastructure—a fact underscored by the race’s high-profile finish.

The Air Race Classic remains the only all-women’s air race of its kind, drawing competitors nationwide. The Sky Queens’ participation marks a milestone for Spokane, blending tradition with forward-thinking ambition.

This year’s finish line brings national attention to Spokane and offers a unique opportunity for local businesses to engage. By sponsoring the Felts Field Sky Queens, companies can support the team and gain recognition for promoting women in aviation and Spokane’s thriving aviation sector.
