Transportation Meeting Summary
October 25, 2018
The October meeting of our Transportation Committee was focused on a presentation from the City of Spokane Valley, who spoke to us about the updates they are making to the Transportation aspect of their Comprehensive Plan, adopted in 2016. This presentation began with a review of progress the City has made in making our region more navigable for pedestrians and cyclists. Did you know Spokane Valley has added 8 miles of sidewalk, 3 miles of shared-use paths, 2 miles of safe-to-school routes, 8 miles of bike lanes, and 41 miles of bike-friendly roads since 2011? This is great progress, and the City looks to continue the good work over the next couple decades. As for economic development and recreation improvements to the Transportation plan, the City is looking to acquire right-of-way (ROW) from Spokane County along the Centennial and Appleway trails in the hopes of neighboring businesses developing parklets, making them open to those commuting and recreating on the trails that traverse our region. At the moment, the City is in the process of completing public outreach, analysis, and updating pedestrian/bike routes throughout the City. In the next couple months, we are expecting City staff to present the final proposed changes to Council as an Amendment to the Comprehensive Plan.
